The river was named in 1830 by Governor James Stirling
after Ernest Earnest Augustus
(Hanover) Duke of Brunswick-Lunenburgh and King of Hanover
. The Duke had been a passenger in 1813 aboard the HMS Brazen when Stirling had been Captain.
The Brunwick has six tributaries
