Nornes was first elected in 1996, and has been re-elected every two years since then. He is currently a member of the House K-12 Education Policy and Oversight Committee, and also serves on the Finance subcommittees for the Early Childhood Finance and Policy Division, the Energy Finance and Policy Division, and the Higher Education and Workforce Development Finance and Policy Division. He was chair of the Higher Education Finance Committee during the 2005-2006 biennium. He is also a former assistant majority whip.
