Bud Scott

Bud Scott was an American jazz
banjoist. He was one of the earliest musicians associated with the New Orleans jazz
scene.
Scott played guitar and violin as a child and performed professionally from an early age. Late in his life, he claimed he had played with the legendary Buddy Bolden
when young. He played with John Robichaux
, possibly as early as 1904; following this he played with Freddie Keppard
's Olympia Orchestra, and joined the Billy King
Traveling Show as a violinist in 1913. He moved to New York City
in 1915 and found work in theatre orchestras; he also sang at this time, and found work playing banjo with Bob Young
in Baltimore
in 1917. In 1921 he played in Will Marion Cook
's Orchestra, and moved to Chicago
around this time. There he played with King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band in 1923 and with Kid Ory
; he played with both on and off again in the 1920s. He also did a stint with Curtis Mosby
's Blue Blowers in Los Angeles
in the mid-1920s. Late in the decade he worked under Erskine Tate

, and Fess Williams
.
Late in 1929 he moved to Los Angeles
, and played there with Leon Herriford, Mutt Carey
, and with his own trio ensemble. He played with Kid Ory
once more from 1944 to 1948, but fell ill and had to retire from music. He died the following year.
