The school is named in honor of Florence Buford, a Charlottesville educator, and first opened its doors in August 1966. In 1988, Buford became the city’s only middle school. Currently, 612 students are enrolled. The current principal, Eric Johnson, came to Buford in the 2007-08 year. Buford has a boy's and girl's basketball
