Following Martin Bulthaup's death, his son Gerd Bulthaup became the head of the company in 1978. Gerd, in seeking to expand the business, came into contact with designer Otl Aicher, whose design ideas were largely based on the principles of the Bauhaus
school which favours simplified forms and functionality.
The company's designs have earned numerous awards, among those in 1997 the European Design Prize and a "lifetime achievement award" from the European Commission
and in 2004 the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design's Good Design Award for the design concept b3.
