The name Bönigen ("of the people of the Bono clan") is composed of the Old High German
personal name Bono and the toponymic suffix -ingun.

of Gsteig bei Interlaken, which includes eight other nearby municipalities.

Bönigen has an area, , of 15.12 km² (5.8 sq mi). Of this area, 2.48 km² (0.957533353309487 sq mi) or 16.4% is used for agricultural purposes, while 8.66 km² (3.3 sq mi) or 57.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.93 km² (0.359075007491058 sq mi) or 6.2% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.17 km² (0.065637366960731 sq mi) or 1.1% is either rivers or lakes and 2.83 km² (1.1 sq mi) or 18.7% is unproductive land.
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.2% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.9%. 49.7% of the total land area is heavily forested and 3.9% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 1.0% is used for growing crops and 6.5% is pastures and 8.7% is used for alpine pastures. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams. Of the unproductive areas, 10.8% is unproductive vegatation, 7.9% is too rocky for vegatation, .
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the Swiss not everybodys People's Party SVP which received 38.6% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS
(25.7%), the FDP
(11.5%) and the local small left-wing parties (8.8%).
The age distribution of the population is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 23.7% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 57.8% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 18.5%.
