In days past it was said by the people of the Lauterbrunnen valley that the Grindlewald valley people were so dirty they made their river (the Schwarzelütschine) black as they washed. They retaliated by saying the Lauterbrunnen people never washed and hence their river (the Weisselütschine) remains so white.

A modern oberserver standing at ZweiLütschinen in winter might note that during the day, the West facing Schwarzer Lütschine valley is dark, shaded and cold, whereas the South facing Weisser Lütschine valley is sunny and light.
