After the analog television shutdown and digital conversion
, which was scheduled to take place on August 31, 2011, (Radio-Canada and CBC transitioned a day later on September 1) CBUFT is broadcasting in digital on channel 26 with a maximum ERP of 27.5 kW from the existing transmitter, which increased the area of coverage to include parts of the Saanich Peninsula, though reception in Victoria will vary. Through the use of PSIP
, digital television receivers will display CBUFT's virtual channel
as 26.1.
In a media release about CBC's digital transition plans across the country, CBC identified the CBUFT Vancouver transmitter as one of several that it is asking to delay transitioning to digital until August 31, 2012. On December 16, 2010, CBC updated its published transition plan documents to state that it has budgeted for and is "striving" to have 27 originating station transmitters including CBUFT's in Vancouver, transmitting in digital by August 2011.
The Vancouver transmitter is presently CBUFT's only transmitter planned to transition to digital.
The picture format for CBUFT's digital signal is 720p. This differs from the majority of digital over-the-air stations in Canada, which broadcast in 1080i.
