The CK12 Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating free and open textbooks. In addition to commissioning the creation of an open educational textbooks, they have also created a web application called "Flexr", which allows a user to edit chapters, collect chapters into a complete textbook which they call a "FlexBook", or to generate a PDF of a FlexBook.
On March 16th, 2009 the office of the Governor of Virginia Timothy M. Kaine issued a press release announcing the launch of a Virginia Physics Flexbook entitled 21st Century Physics Flexbook: A Compilation of Contemporary and Emerging Technologies, which is stated to be "[a]uthored by thirteen K–12 physics teacher volunteers, as well as industry and university faculty, the Flexbook is a web-based, open-content compilation that will allow teachers to share the most up-to-date lessons and techniques, bringing the best information and practices to all students in the Commonwealth."
