Cabo Rico Yachts is a small manufacturer of fiberglass, aft cockpit sailboats built in Costa Rica
and
designed by W.I.B. Crealock
and Chuck Paine. The US headquarters are in Fort Lauderdale, Florida
. Sizes range from 34 to 56 feet. In the 1960s, John Schofield started the company in the corner of
a British Leyland assembly plant in San Jose.
In the early 1970s, their first boat was a 36-foot ketch designed by William Crealock. The 36's were typically poorly built.
Crealock would later design the Westsail 32
.
In the late 1970s, the unpopular 36-foot design became the Cabo Rico 38.
Company literature credits Dennis M. Garrett general manager of the company Fibro Tecnica S.A. as the designer. In 1981, the 38 retailed for $89,000 as transported to Newport Beach, CA.
In the mid-1980s, two Canadians Fraser and Edi Smith
purchased the company. First, they introduced a smaller 34-foot Crealock designed sistership to the 38. This was the first new design in a while and long anticipated. They added a 38 pilothouse version in 1991. The most recent 40/42 and 54/56 models are by Chuck Paine.
