The name of the city derives from the Tupi language: Cacequi, (bean's water) from cumandá, bean; í, water.
Other definition say the name of the city means: indigenous chief water or indigenous chief River.

In 1977, he returned for Santa Maria, in Rio Grande do Sul to end the course of Legal Practice.
From 1978 in before, alternated the legal practice with the painting. In 1981 he was for Porto Alegre to assume the post of public autarchic attorney in the Institute of Foresight of the State. From 1987, one begins to dedicate exclusively to the painting where if it made one of the leaders into the market of the south of the country. He did engraving in metal in the atelier of Iberê Camargo, and began to participate effectively of the world of the arts like juror in official halls of art, speaker in universities, writing on art in newspapers and specialized magazines. It published the books “ Painting and Word ” and “ Art: Emotion and Dialog ”.
He's counselor and one of the idealizadores of the Museum of Art of Montenegro, in Rio Grande do Sul. At present, he divides the time between the ateliers of Porto Alegre and São Paulo, in the Peixoto Gomide's street, near to the MASP. - Erico Santos, famous painter from Cacequi - Erico Santos was born in Cacequi, in Rio Grande do Sul, in 1952. He began to paint professionally from 1976, in São Paulo, in Pinheiros' district, in the atelier of the painter and restoring florentino, Renzo Gori. He helped Gori to restore works of important artists like Portinari, Di Cavalcanti, Tarsila, Rebolo, Bonadei, Volpi etc. and the pictures what he was painting were taken by the marchands that were frequenting the atelier.
