When Debbie Jones

came to live with Paddy and Emily Kirk (she was their new foster daughter), she made friends with the Dingles. One day she showed Cain a picture of her biological mother but it was only when he saw Sam looking at old family pictures that he realised Charity was her mother. Cain's stepfather, Shadrach, made him realise that he was Debbie's father when he said Debbie reminded him of Cain at the same age. Cain grabbed the opportunity to blackmail Charity - threatening to tell Chris but Charity told him first and Chris welcomed Debbie into their lives.

Despite his bad boy personality, Cain and Debbie bonded closely, leading eventually to Cain and Charity having an affair. However, Chris realised what was happening and on discovering he had a fatal brain tumour, framed Charity for his murder. Cain was there too when Chris died, (he had planned to murder Chris), and ran away with Debbie but returned to clear his name. With Charity in gaol, they declared their love and planned to stay together. However, on her release, Charity couldn't live with Cain as she was too used to the high life and they soon split up. The sparring continued until Sadie King

hired him to ruin Tom and Charity's wedding. She and Cain made it seem like Cain and Charity were back together. Sadie hired a detective to follow Charity and Cain kissed her, despite her struggles, knowing the camera wouldn't lie. Charity cleared her name and left the village and Sadie was rejected by her family, turning to Cain. She spent a night with him but dumped him later but Cain killed her beloved dog, Damon, in revenge. Zak was so disgusted that Cain had betrayed Charity and threw him out so he and Debbie moved in to Butler's Farm with Andy Sugden.

Cain threw himself into looking after Sarah and was absolutely smitten. Unfortunately Debbie wasn’t and made it clear that she didn’t want to be a mum.  to take Sarah with her when she left the village. When the Dingles found out what Debbie had done, they went mad.

Cain went after Emily but couldn't find her, returning in a fury. Desperate to make Debbie pay for her actions, Cain made her life hell by being constantly nasty, leading her to move in with local vicar Ashley Thomas

. Debbie bonded closely with Ashley's niece, Jasmine, and they had a brief romantic relationship which Cain made sure he destroyed by seducing Jasmine and making sure Debbie saw them together. Debbie couldn’t believe Cain's actions and vowed revenge but Cain didn’t care, he’d settled the score. On Father's Day

, Debbie vowed revenge regardless, cutting her ties with Cain and Jasmine but reconciled with Jasmine when Jasmine told her that she was pregnant and wanted an abortion. When Cain heard about Jasmine's baby, he was thrilled to be a father again but was horrified to learn Jasmine had no intention of having the baby. He tried talking her round but she wouldn't listen. Sadie also heard and paid for Jasmine to go private - revenge for Cain killing her dog. On the day Jasmine had the termination, Cain searched frantically for her and Debbie but it was too late.

Cain and Sadie were responsible for sabotaging the King's River Show Home. Sadie paid Cain to drive a JCB in to the house and Jimmy only patched the damage up, leading to the explosion. Sadie refused to sleep with Cain, infuriating him so he told Jimmy that Sadie had paid him to trash the house and claimed they were having an affair. He and Jimmy planned to set her up, just as he and Sadie set Charity up. When Sadie confronted him, Cain said he would tell Matthew, that they were having an affair. Sadie hit back by telling Ashley that Cain was sleeping with Jasmine, resulting in the Dingles throwing Cain out and let Debbie move back. Now homeless, Cain left the village for a while.

The sabotage of the show house damaged the gas pipes. Due to pressure to meet deadlines, Jimmy had them patched up, meaning to do a proper job later. Unfortunately gas built up in a cupboard and when sparked by an automatic light switch, the show house exploded, causing the deaths of Dawn Woods

, Noreen Bell and David Brown. When Cain found out, he and Jimmy felt terrible guilt for their part in the showhome explosion but Sadie showed no interest at all. Feeling the need to be punished for what he'd done, he confessed to murdering his late sister-in-law, Alice, so Samson wouldn't lose both his parents. This act redeemed him with his family, even Debbie. He was bailed by Sadie, who sent money to Wishing Well cottage, which Zak and Shadrach surrendered at the hearing.

Out on bail, Cain agreed to help Sadie get revenge on Tom and Matthew King. They schemed for weeks, eventually breaking in to Home Farm and learning the Kings were millionaires. Cain and Sadie plotted a kidnap of Tom King for a large ransom. Sadie knew nobody would believe Cain was capable of murder so they planned to fake her death so Tom would co-operate. However, things didn't go to plan. Debbie took great pleasure in telling Cain that Sadie had paid for Jasmine's abortion, leaving Cain heartbroken and furious. After a violent confrontation with Sadie, Cain followed her to the meeting place regardless.

As Sadie and Tom discussed the house collapse, Cain kidnapped them. After hiding in a barn for a night, Cain returned to the village and was confronted by Chastity. Cain denied knowing anything about Tom and Sadie's disappearance and left. When the police began closing in on his hideout, Cain took them to an abandoned factory, switched cars and donned a disguise reminiscent of Mr. Magoo

. However, the police followed him to a quarry where Cain sidetracked them by sending his empty car over a cliff, making everyone think Tom and Sadie were inside. While the police searched the lake, Cain assaulted two policemen and disguised himself in a police uniforms. After "shooting" Sadie, Cain forced Tom to phone Chas to deliver the ransom. This was also the last time he saw Debbie. Debbie begged her father to take her with him, even suggesting she get Sarah back but they parted in tears. Cain gave some of the ransom to an old lady, asking her to post it to Debbie. Cain was surprised by her honesty and realised he wanted to change. At the airport, Cain got into the plane alone, telling Sadie that he didn't want to be the same person he'd always been.

Cain left a message for Debbie on her voicemail, telling her to ignore what the others said. He wasn't with Sadie and he loved Debbie more than he'd ever shown. After his departure, Cain was rarely mentioned by his family. On Debbie's 18th, a year after he fled, he sent her an expensive silver watch.

2009—

In February 2009, Cain was arrested on his return to the country. He was attempting to return to support and help Debbie, who was being held on remand for the murder of PC Shane Doyle. He hired a lawyer who specialised in self-defence cases to help Debbie, paying him in advance.
Cain returned on 28 April and they immediately went up to Butler's Farm. Debbie told him that Andy was refusing her access to Sarah. The same day, Jimmy King

. They flirted for a while but it didn't come to anything as he realised she was using him to make Mark jealous.

Cain took an instant dislike to Michael - Debbie's new boyfriend but they didn't care. Cain was proved right when Michael admitted that he was getting married in a few days to his pregnant fiancee. In love with Michael, Cain and Debbie crashed the wedding

and were shocked to discover that his fiancée was Debbie's mum and Cain's ex-flame - Charity Tate. Michael called the wedding off, after discovering that Charity had lied about being pregnant. Cain warned Debbie not to have anything to do with Charity but on discovering that she and her young son, Noah, were homeless, invited them to stay with her. Charity took her up on it and moved in but took some persuasion to stay. She and Carl King planned to rob Cain of his money but Cain realised and went after her. He and Debbie caught Charity in the act and refused to believe her when she said she was replacing it. Cain also threw her and Noah out so she moved in with Marlon. He also gave her the money she had been about to steal and after Debbie's reassurance that they were okay, left the village.

He returned on December 22nd bearing presents for Debbie and Sarah. He was still angry with Charity, but they reconciled on Christmas Day after he agreed to marry her when she proposed.

Cain is taken back when he learns that Shadrach, the man he believed was his father for most of his life, is dead. Although Cain had never appreciated Shadrach it was clear that he felt a lot of grief over his loss.

Cain discovers Mark Wylde's wallet in the woods. In reality Mark had been shot and killed by his wife Natasha, which Cain was unaware of. Cain blackmails Natasha and Nathan into paying him to keep quiet about the wallet as he thinks there is something sinister behind Mark's disappearance, however when Sam's dog Alfie digs up the body Nathan sets up his half-brother and Cain's mechanic Ryan Lamb

for Mark's murder and he is subsequently charged with murdering Mark.

Cain told Maisie he had blackmailed Nathan and Natasha and they had paid him to keep quiet. But he could not help Ryan without incriminating himself for fraud and blackmail. He attended Ryan's trial and after witnessing Nathan lie in the witness box he decided to take action. After making sure that Sam kept quiet about the wallet during his witness testimony, Cain kidnapped Nathan and held him hostage in a disused barn. He threatened Nathan, telling him that he would kill him if Ryan was found guilty. Ryan was later found guilty of the murder however Natasha soon confessed to it much to Maisie and Will's distraught. Cain should have been arrested and should be spending at least a year in prison for holding Nathan hostage.

After Natasha's arrest, Cain bumped into Nathan, struggling to walk through the village after the injuries that he had inflicted, and warned Nathan that it "wasn't over yet".
