History

 was established 1855 and Lake City was chosen as the county seat the following year. The county seat was moved the Rockwell City in 1877 and a new courthouse was built there for just over $2,000. It was destroyed in a fire in 1884. A hotel and a building in town were rented for $1 a day to house county offices and functions. Another courthouse was built in 1886 and was sold to the Catholic Church when iIt was replaced by the current courthouse in 1914. The Classical Revival structure was built for $116,200. The building is clad in limestone
