on a free transfer in 2007. He made his debut for the reserves
toward the end of the 2007–08 season. He became a regular in the reserve team during the second half of the following season, appearing ten times and scoring four goals. He then made his first team debut on 24 May 2009 in a Premier League match against Portsmouth
, making him Wigan's youngest ever player to play in the Premier League. In July 2009, he signed his first professional contract with the club. McManaman remained in the reserve team during the 2009–10 season
