Camp Cosmos was a comic strip
for a short time in the UK
comic The Beano
. It made its first appearance in issue 2859, dated 3 May 1997. In that first strip, Bert Spontlin, scrap merchant and sausage knotter, got his wife to fire a lorry
into the sky with him in it to collect the space debris
. When he came back he made a fortune by selling it off, and turned the rest into the world's first inter-galactic holiday camp, Camp Cosmos. His staff included a Rubbish Gobbler from Jupiter
(who was assigned the job of Head Cleaner), an Octopus like creature from Uranus
(Head of Entertainment), a character named Splosho from Planet Merdon (Chief Pool Attendant) and a creature with multiple eyes (Lookout). The strip was drawn by John Geering
, and was one of the nominees to be voted into the comic by readers in that year, along with Sydd, Trash Can Ally, Have A Go Jo, Crazy for Daisy
and Tim Traveller
. In the end, however, Crazy for Daisy and Tim Traveller won. However, Camp Cosmos did appear in one annual.
