Candle salad
Encyclopedia
Candle Salad is a vintage fruit salad
that was popular in America during the 1950s and 1960s. The salad is typically composed of lettuce, pineapple, banana, cherry, and either mayonnaise or, according to some recipes, cottage cheese. Modern authority Amy Sedaris
describes the process as follows: Place a lettuce leaf on your favorite plate or napkin. Stand several pineapple rings on top of the lettuce. Position half a banana in the hole of the pineapple. Top the banana with a smidgen of mayonnaise. Add a bright red cherry on top of the mayonnaise to resemble a burning flame for the Crafty Candle Salad. Sedaris appeared on Bravo TV's Watch What Happens L!VE to prepare candle salad on a segment titled "Craft Time with Amy Sedaris."
A favorite for moms, candle salad was known as an easy way to get kids to eat fruit due to its unusual appearance. Because of its simple construction candle salad was also considered a child-friendly introduction to cooking. Candle salad was published in the 1957 edition of the Betty Crocker's Cook Book for Boys and Girls
with the description, “It’s better than a real candle because you can eat it.”
