Where the general public would refer to a parachute as a whole unit, actual users would call it a parachute system or rig as each system can be a combination of a different main canopies, reserve canopies, and container systems depending on the intended use.

Canopies are in general sold by manufacturers with their own specific line set as line lengths (Trim)
and line type are an important aspect of the performance of each canopy design.
