Five political parties fielded candidates for seats in the 72-member National Assembly
. They are the ruling African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde
(PAICV), Movement for Democracy
(MpD), Democratic Renewal Party
(PRD), Social Democratic Party
, and the Democratic and Independent Cape Verdean Union
(UCID). Only the PAICV and MpD have presented candidates in every electoral constituency.
