and cardinal
Joseph Cardijn
, known for his work founding the Young Christian Workers
organisation. Cardijn's decision to spend his life bringing Christianity back to the working class (through imprisonment for his activities, to the opposition of the movement from the church itself), was an inspiration to many, and was considered a worthy title for the college.
communities of Morphett Vale, Noarlunga Downs and Willunga sought to create a secondary college in the area. In collaboration with the South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools, they employed a project co-ordinator, and founding principal Br Walter Smith, to head the construction of buildings and initial undertaking of the college. Br Walter continued in this position for the next four years, concluding in 1988 to undertake missionary work in Pakistan.
In 1989, Mr Jeff Croser was appointed Principal. Mr Croser had begun his time at Cardijn on the first day of the College as Deputy Principal. He oversaw the consolidation of its academic programs & pastoral care programs.
The South Australian Certificate of Education
was implemented statewide in 1992, which saw reforms in all aspects of senior curriculum.
At the end of 1992 Mr Croser left Cardijn to become Principal of Cabra Dominican College
.
The infrastructure had developed dramatically in the establishing decade. The library (later named the Brother Walter Smith Resource Centre) was the founding building, followed by the Art/Technology centre.
One year after the founding of the college saw the establishment of the first house. Romero house, a two storey
complex, encompassed 6 classrooms on the top floor, and a drama performance area (later a performing arts centre), a Home Economics
area, and sports changerooms on the ground level. These founding buildings created the general style of the buildings seen and built today at the college.
The next principal, Mr Viano Jaksa, placed an emphasis on Information Technology
, creating a regional focus for IT. Infrastructure was improved to accommodate this advance in education delivery. Mr Jaksa concluded his appointment at the college in 1999.
Br John Pill, principal from 1999 to 2000, initiated changes to the organisational structure of the college. Learning Area Coordinators (LAC's) were created from the pre-existing roles of Subject Coordinators. The five house leaders were designated as student development coordinators, charged with the role of pastoral care and development and management of the five houses.
Mr Michael Dahl, former Principal at St John’s College, Whyalla, was appointed Principal of Cardijn in 2000. Mr Dahl's focus was in the area of improving the College infrastructure, beginning with a large scale plan of improvements and much needed maintenance. In addition, he proceeded with the development of the College Gymnasium, redevelopment of the Administration area and redevelopment of the College entrance and roundabout. These developments were completed in 2003. He also initiated a review of College administrative procedures and Marketing strategy. Mr Dahl completed his tenure at Cardijn College in 2004 following his appointment as Principal Consultant at the Catholic Education Office.
Mr Paul Rijken was appointed as the Principal of Cardijn College in 2005; previously he was the Deputy Principal of St Aloysius College, Adelaide
. Prior to that appointment he was a founding teacher of Cardijn College, beginning his teaching duties as the Physical Education
