Carnbroe is a village in Coatbridge
, North Lanarkshire
, Scotland
.
A former industrial village, Carnbroe is located southeast of Coatbridge and southwest of neighbouring Airdrie
. It lies above a meander of the North Calder Water, which flows around the village in a steep gorge. Once a collier village, a large iron-works was built here in 1838. Now long gone, the village has grown to occupy that site. The Calder Iron Works, developed in the early 19th century immediately to the north on the opposite bank of the river, closed in 1921. Carnbroe now benefits from a primary school, a grocery store, a private nursery and an elderly care home.
The village is now undergoing a major extension, expanding over the North Calder Water, where further housing schemes are being built, as well as a state-of-the-art community centre. This will also give access to the village from Whifflet
as a new road is underconstruction.
