Carpathite
Encyclopedia
Carpathite is a rare hydrocarbon mineral. It is the mineral form of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon
coronene
with formula: C24H12.
It was first described in 1955 for an occurrence in Transcarpathian Oblast, Ukraine
. It was named for the Carpathian Mountains
. It has also been reported from the Presov Region of the Slovak Republic, the Kamchatka Oblast
in Russia and from San Benito County, California
.
It occurs at the contact zone of a diorite
intrusive into argillite
within cavities in the Ukraine. In the California occurrence it appears as a low temperature hydrothermal phase. It is associated with idrialite
, amorphous organic material, calcite
, barite
, quartz
, cinnabar
and metacinnabar.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons , also known as poly-aromatic hydrocarbons or polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, are potent atmospheric pollutants that consist of fused aromatic rings and do not contain heteroatoms or carry substituents. Naphthalene is the simplest example of a PAH...
coronene
Coronene
Coronene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon comprising six peri-fused benzene rings. Its chemical formula is . It is a yellow material that dissolves in such solvents as benzene, toluene, and dichloromethane. Its solutions emit blue light fluorescence under UV light...

Kamchatka Oblast
Kamchatka Oblast was, until being incorporated into Kamchatka Krai on July 1, 2007, a federal subject of Russia . To the north, it bordered Magadan Oblast and Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. Koryak Autonomous Okrug was located in the northern part of the oblast...

It occurs at the contact zone of a diorite
Diorite
Diorite is a grey to dark grey intermediate intrusive igneous rock composed principally of plagioclase feldspar , biotite, hornblende, and/or pyroxene. It may contain small amounts of quartz, microcline and olivine. Zircon, apatite, sphene, magnetite, ilmenite and sulfides occur as accessory...
intrusive into argillite
Argillite
An argillite is a fine-grained sedimentary rock composed predominantly of indurated clay particles. Argillaceous rocks are basically lithified muds and oozes. They contain variable amounts of silt-sized particles. The argillites grade into shale when the fissile layering typical of shale is...
within cavities in the Ukraine. In the California occurrence it appears as a low temperature hydrothermal phase. It is associated with idrialite
Idrialite
Idrialite, or idrialine, is a soft, orthorhombic hydrocarbon mineral, chemical formula: C22H14. It is usually greenish yellow to light brown in colour with bluish fluorescence....
, amorphous organic material, calcite
Calcite
Calcite is a carbonate mineral and the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate . The other polymorphs are the minerals aragonite and vaterite. Aragonite will change to calcite at 380-470°C, and vaterite is even less stable.-Properties:...
, barite
Barite
Baryte, or barite, is a mineral consisting of barium sulfate. The baryte group consists of baryte, celestine, anglesite and anhydrite. Baryte itself is generally white or colorless, and is the main source of barium...
, quartz
Quartz
Quartz is the second-most-abundant mineral in the Earth's continental crust, after feldspar. It is made up of a continuous framework of SiO4 silicon–oxygen tetrahedra, with each oxygen being shared between two tetrahedra, giving an overall formula SiO2. There are many different varieties of quartz,...
