Castle Hill is the area of land understood by the Tlingit people to be ceded to the Russian government following the battle of 1804
. It is also the location where, in 1867, the Russian flag was lowered and the American
flag was raised, marking the transfer of Alaska to the United States.
In 1959, after Alaska was admitted as the 49th U.S. state, Castle Hill was the location where the first 49-star U.S. flag in Alaska was raised, though the ceremony was unofficial and secret.
It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1962.
No structures remain. It is now an Alaska state park located at Lincoln and Katlian Streets known as Baranof Castle Hill State Historic Site.
