Cavitary pneumonia
Encyclopedia
Cavitary Pneumonia is a disease in which the normal lung architecture is replaced by a cavity. In the healthy lung, oxygen transport occurs at the level of the alveoli which has an average size of 0.1 mm. These air spaces can become enlarged by a number of processes: bacterial infection (Tuberculosis
), fungal infection, vasculitis
(Wegener's granulomatosis
), collagen vascular disease (Sjögren's syndrome
) or granulomatous disease (Sarcoidosis
).
Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis, MTB, or TB is a common, and in many cases lethal, infectious disease caused by various strains of mycobacteria, usually Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Tuberculosis usually attacks the lungs but can also affect other parts of the body...

Thin walled cavity Actinomyces Actinomyces Actinomyces from Greek "actino" that means mucus and fungus, is a genus of the actinobacteria class of bacteria. They are all Gram-positive and are characterized by contiguous spread, suppurative and granulomatous inflammation, and formation of multiple abscesses and sinus tracts that may... Nocardia Nocardia Nocardia is a genus of weakly staining Gram-positive, catalase-positive, rod-shaped bacteria. It forms partially acid-fast beaded branching filaments . It has a total of 85 species. Some species are non-pathogenic while others are responsible for nocardiosis. Nocardia are found worldwide in soil... Klebsiella Klebsiella Klebsiella is a genus of non-motile, Gram-negative, oxidase-negative, rod-shaped bacteria with a prominent polysaccharide-based capsule. It is named after the German microbiologist Edwin Klebs... Staphylococcus aureus Staphylococcus aureus Staphylococcus aureus is a facultative anaerobic Gram-positive coccal bacterium. It is frequently found as part of the normal skin flora on the skin and nasal passages. It is estimated that 20% of the human population are long-term carriers of S. aureus. S. aureus is the most common species of... Anaerobic organism Anaerobic organism An anaerobic organism or anaerobe is any organism that does not require oxygen for growth. It could possibly react negatively and may even die if oxygen is present... |
