Celeste is a novel by V. C. Andrews. It is the first book in the Gemini series. It is followed by Black Cat
and Child of Darkness. It is the story of a young girl forced by her mother to assume the identity of her twin brother after his death.
Celeste can see the favor her mother has for her brother, Noble, which worsens after the death of their Father in an accident. Celeste's mother tells her to watch over Noble, but she is ultimately unsuccessful as Noble drowns a short time after their father. This pushes her mother over the edge.
She awakens Celeste the next day to go to the graveyard. She sees the grave her mother has dug and is surprised to see Nobel dressed in her clothes and her amulet. Her mother has switched the two as she slept. Her mother says we are her to say goodbye to Celeste and calls her Noble.
From this point on Celeste is forced to be Noble while it is believed that she was kidnapped.
She is urged by her mother to be a boy and everything is fine until her body begins to develop. Her chest is bound and every ounce of femininity is purged from her.
A family moves in next door and the son becomes an acquaintance of Celeste's. He discovers her one day laying naked in the woods and they have sex, and do so again the next day, which is when he falls into the same river as Nobel did and drowns. Months later Celeste has gotten bigger around the middle and her breasts have swelled. Her mother sees her body and realizes that she is pregnant.
Celeste gives birth to another Celeste and becomes her big brother.

Plot
