They can be deployed as a primary WAN link to a location where wired connections are not cost-effective, can also be used as a secondary or business continuity

Types

There are two types:
  • Compact: the cellular modem and the router are the same device. These are also called "integrated" or "embedded" cellular routers.
  • Modular: one can connect the cellular modem to the router. These are sometimes called "slide" devices if there is a receptacle for a cellular data card
