Founded in New York City in 1886 as M. Gottesman & Company, the firm was substantially expanded under D.S. Gottesman, in the first half of the twentieth century.
The company has grown both organically and acquisition. In 1984 they acquired Lindenmeyr Paper Corporation; D.F. Munroe Company in 1988; Communication Paper Corporation in 1991; and, Perkins & Squier Company in 1998.
The company was run by Ira D. Wallach
into the late 20th century. His son, James G. Wallach was CEO until his death in 1998. Today, the firm is run by his brother, Kenneth L. Wallach, with fourth and fifth generation Gottesman family members active in the firm.
