  • receiving annual returns and monitoring the activities of charities
  • promoting public trust in charitable organisations
  • providing education and assistance to the charitable sector
  • encouraging best practice in governance and use of resources
  • providing advice on matters relating to charities.


The Charities Commission declined an application by the Travis Trust to register as a charity. In a landmark legal case by the Travis Trust against the Charities Commission the ruling was made in favour of the Commission.
