She also directed and starred in local theater productions and was acitve in a non-profit group that fed the homeless.

Doherty died in 1988 at the age of 41. She died of "natural causes" at her mother's home in Woodland Hills, CA on May 29, 1988. The cause of death was listed as pancreatitis, due to chronic alcoholism.

She was survived by a son, Trevor Black and her mother, Toni Doherty.
