He was born 1834 at the family home of The Hirsel near Coldstream
, the son of the Cospatrick Douglas-Home, 11th Earl of Home, and known as Lord Dunglass until his father's death.
He was Lord Lieutenant of Berwickshire 1879-80, then Lord-Lieutenant of Lanarkshire from 1890.
On August 18, 1870, he married Maria Grey and they had five children:
