He was born to a musical family at Newcastle-on-Tyne and his two brothers, Thomas and Bernard, were also painters. He trained in the Government School of Design, Newcastle, followed by the Antwerp Academy and the studio of Baron Leys

 in 1910, he was also honoured as an Associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1890 and became a member in 1897. He died in Falmouth on September 30, 1917.
