 in 1883. In 1885 he was elected to the Virginia State Senate, serving the counties of Highland, Bath and Allegheny until 1897. From 1898 to 1906, he was a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia and in that first year was elected by the board to be the Rector of the University. He was the last Rector to serve the university before they adopted the presidential system for the school. The first president of the University, Edwin A.
