minor hurling team in the late 1980s. He won both Leinster and All-Ireland
honours in 1988 and he soon joined the county under-21 team. At this level Carter won both provincial and All-Ireland
medals in 1990. That same year he won both Leinster and All-Ireland
titles with the county's junior hurling side.
Carter later joined the county senior team and won his first senior Leinster
title on the field of play in 1998. He later lined out in his first All-Ireland final appearance, however, Kilkenny were beaten on the day by Offaly
. Ironically, 'the Cats' had beaten Ofally in the Leinster final. In spite of this Carter still collected his first All-Star
award. The following year he won a second provincial medal, however, Kilkenny lost the All-Ireland final to Cork. In 2000 Carter won a third Leinster title in-a-row, however, the stakes couldn't be higher as Kilkenny faced the prospect of being the first team to lose three consecutive All-Ireland finals. Offaly provided the opposition once again, however, the game turned into a rout as 'the Cats' powered their way to a huge victory and Carter collected his first senior All-Ireland
medal. Once again his prowess earned him an All-Star award. In 2001 Carter collected a fourth provincial title, however, Kilkenny were surprisingly beaten by Galway
in the All-Ireland semi-final. He also collected a third All-Star award that year. In 2002 Carter was sensationally dropped from the starting fifteen in spite of being KIlkenny's top scorer in 2001. He made some cameo appearances as a substitute and won another set of Leinster and All-Ireland titles. In 2003 Carter was elected captain of the team and lead his men to a National Hurling League
triumph. He later quit the county panel after he was sensationally dropped by manager Brian Cody
. Carter has never forgiven Cody for this as it cost him the chance of captaining his native-county to an All-Ireland title.
