The station has street access to both platforms, connected by a road overbridge, giving it de facto Easy Access for wheelchairs, except for the problem of the gap and step between train and platform, the platforms being on a curve.

 it was proposed to upgrade Cheltenham station to four tracks as part of the quadruplication of the line between Epping and Beecroft. There were, however, no plans to stop North West Rail Line services at Cheltenham station. However, due to complaints by local residents about noise and increased train services, the proposal to route the line through Cheltenham was scrapped, in favour of a tunnel starting at Epping station from the Epping to Chatswood Line. there are still plans to upgrade the line between Strathfield and Hornsby to four tracks, and Cheltenham station would be upgraded as part of this project.
