While mildly successful during his early years as an actor, his popularity soared after his role as Fang Ansheng (better known as Fang Lao Shi or Teacher/Mr Fang) in the 1995 TV drama serial, The Morning Express.
In 1997, Chen took a three-year break from acting in order to explore image styling
. He returned to the screen in 2000 and continues to be one of the most prolific artistes in MediaCorp.
Chen has proven to be one of the most versatile artiste. His ability to create different images and act different roles be they ugly or handsome, good or evil, serious or funny, able or handicapped has won him accolades and acting nomination and awards. He won the Best Actor Award in the Star Awards for the year 2001 and 2005. Chen won his third Best Actor award at the 2009 Star Awards for his role as an AIDS victim in "By My Side
". He won the award for the fourth time in the 2010 Star Awards for his role in Daddy at Home. His latest drama seriel is 'The Best Things in Life'(五福到).
Other than his acting, Chen is also known for recording the theme songs to several drama series, including both Morning Express and Cupid Love. The theme song for the latter, Guan Huai Fang Shi (关怀方式), remain popular in both Singapore and Malaysia to this day.
