Plot

The story begins with the childhood scene of all the main characters three brothers (eldest played by veteran Radha Ravi) and youngest sister nandhini (Kushboo Sundar) who is pampered and brought up by three brothers after they lost their parents, Chinna Thambi (Prabhu) is the son of a singer who also earns his livelihood by singing, he is not worldly wise and is amateurish and innocent, his mother (Manorama) lives with him in the outer area of the village where nandhini lives with her brothers, nandhini is considered very lucky by her brothers and each one wakes up to her face, things go awry when one day nandhini falls in love with Chinna thambi and tricks him into marrying him without even him knowing, she falls for him since it was him who saved her life when one of her brothers enemies tried to kill her, story line goes where Chinna thambi without knowing the importance seeks alliance for Nandhini, at last one of her sister in-laws realizes the truth and after a small struggle Chinna Thambi is accepted as Nandhini's husband by all.

Box office records

Chinna thambi, one of the highest grossers of Tamil fim industry, was said to have collected about Rs. 10 crores overall ( US$ 3.3 million at 1992 rates) . All box office records of Tamil movies released before 1992 were broken.

The film completed silver jubilee - i.e. 175 days in 9 screens, 100 days in 47 screens, 50 days in 101 screens. The silver jubilee record of Chinna thambi in 9 screens has not been broken by any other movie, though Rajinikanth starrer Padayappa ( 1999 – 100 days in 85 screens) broke 100 days record of Chinna Thambi.
