, located on the northern slopes of western Stara Planina mountain and the area of the so called Fore-Balkan. It is named after its administrative centre - the town of Chiprovtsi
. In the southwest, the municipality borders on Republic of Serbia.
The area embraces a territory of 286.8 km² with a population of 3,657 inhabitants, as of February 2011.
