Christoph J. Scriba is a German historian of mathematics.

from 1959 to 1962. From 1969 he was the owner of the newly established Chair of the History of Mathematics at the TU Berlin . From 1975 until his retirement in 1995 he was Professor of History of Natural Science and Mathematics at the University of Hamburg
and Director of the Institute. His successor there was Karin Reich. Scriba was the Executive Committee of the ICHM (International Commission on the History of Mathematics) and its president from 1977 to 1985. He is a member of Jungius company in Hamburg, the Leopoldina, the Académie Internationale d'Histoire des Sciences, and since 1995 the Göttingen Academy of Sciences. In 1993 he was awarded the Kenneth O. May Prize
of the ICHM. He was the doctorate advisor of Eberhard Knobloch.
Life and work
Scriba earned his doctorate in 1957 at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen about James Gregory 's early writings on the calculus. His doctorate advisor was Joseph Ehrenfried Hofmann.In a research trip to Oxford in 1966 he investigated the estate of John Wallis, when Joseph Ehrenfried Hofmann and Bernhard Sticker has been habilitated ( studies on the mathematics of John Wallis ).
