Patients with CMML can present with various clinical features, mimicking either myelodysplastic syndroms or myeloproliferative neoplasms depending upon a patient's specific presentation. Due to this controversy it was classified by the World Health Organization
in a "myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative" category of medical conditions in the early 2000s.
Some clinicians distinguish between myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative forms of CMML.
