City College Birmingham was formed as result of the merger of Handsworth and East Birmingham colleges in 1998. The college is dispersed throughout the Birmingham area.

At present the college has approximately 25,000 students and has a mixed base of permanent and part-time staff in a variety of roles to accommodate the needs of both the college and the students. The college provides a range of opportunities including vocational programmes.
