. It is 60 km from Ningbo in the east, 148 km from Shanghai in the north and 138 km from Hangzhou in the west. Cixi City covers a total land area of 1,154 square kilometers.

Economy

Cixi is a important manufacturing city in northern Zhejiang province. The Hangzhou Bay New District is located in the city.

It is one of the three biggest home appliance manufacturing centres on mainland China. Cixi has more than 80 000 enterprises across over 30 industries. It is the largest Curio furniture distribution, cigarette lighter, European adapter manufacturing, twill fabric, eel processing zone on mainland China.

Population

At the end of 2008, there were 1,020,000 registered permanent residents and over 770,000 temporary residents. Seventeen towns and three subdistricts are under the jurisdiction of Cixi City and there are 297 administrative villages, 28 residents’ committees and 47 communities.
