Australia, and is the only Australian "Clarion" workshop. Unlike the US-based Clarion and Clarion West, which are annual events, it currently runs every two years. Clarion South is organised by a team of four volunteer convenors - Robert Dobson, Kate Eltham, Heather Gammage and Robert Hoge.

"Clarion South... is the most intensive professional development program for speculative fiction writers in the southern hemisphere." Modeled on the venerable Clarion Writers Workshop (now in San Diego, California, USA), it was founded in 2004 to overcome "the tyranny of distance" that made it prohibitively expensive for Australian writers to attend the US-based Clarion workshops. Some of its graduates have already become notable.
