. As part of the renovation, several of the Clinton's rooms were restored to their original 1930s state. This included purchased items found as part of the TV series American Pickers
. The most costly portion of the renovation however was re-finishing the basement of the hotel. When the facility was built in the 1930s, the hotel basement was never intended to be used by guests. Instead, Neidler designed the basement to be part storage/part animal mausoleum for wealthy South Beach pet owners. While the hotel stopped selling mausoleum sites in 1954, several pets remained on site until the 2004 renovation, including a parrot named Babalu who was owned by Desi Arnez, and a dog named Fido, which was the prize position of Clark Gable
, who frequented the Clinton after retiring from the pictures. During the renovation, all remaining pet remains were reunited with family members and have been relocated to new resting places in the greater Miami area.
