Encyclopedia
Cobalt Park in North Tyneside is the UK's largest office park, with around 1250000 square feet (116,128.8 m²) of office space built or under construction. It is situated next to West Allotment, and has good transport access.
The park is located right next to the A19 which links directly to the A1 (a 10 minute drive to the north) and the Tyne Tunnel (a similar distance to the south).
Nexus, the Tyne & Wear Public Transport Executive, runs a high frequency bus service (Route 19) between the North Shields
Metro station and the newly opened Northumberland Park
Metro stations on the Tyne & Wear Metro system. North Shields was chosen as the nearest large town centre, and Northumberland Park for its Park & Ride facilities.
Other frequent bus services connect the park well to surrounding areas.
The park is located on one of the main Waggonways cycle routes. Waggonways is a network of cycle paths recently developed by North Tyneside Council.
Current residents include Procter & Gamble
, Orange
, and Land Securities Trillium (who all occupy two buildings) as well as Fujitsu
, North Tyneside NHS Healthcare Trust, Capio
Healthcare, and the Newcastle Village De Vere Hotel.
As of March 2007, new buildings were currently under construction for Northumbria NHS Healthcare Trust, GE Money and North Tyneside Council, in addition to a new 100000 sq ft (9,290.3 m²) speculative office at the main entrance to Phase 2 of the park.
The Cobalt Business Park benefited from Enterprise Zone status until August 2006, with a business rate free period until then, and 100% capital allowances for corporation tax. It's been open for 8 years now, and over the next decade plans to complete a further 1000000 sq ft (92,903 m²) in office space. The site already has a doctors surgery and nursery/creche on site. Tesco
was recently advised it would be turned down in its application for permission to build a Tesco Extra convenience store.
In 2007, North Tyneside Council moved into Cobalt 16, to use as its new unified administrative headquarters, named "Quadrant" following a competition for local school children.
