Colin Trussell
Encyclopedia
Colin Charles Trussell is an English former football referee from Crosby, Liverpool, who officiated in the English Football League from 1985-1993 during which time he officiated more than 250 professional football games.
Trussell became a referee after deciding against playing football fulltime for family reasons. Before becoming a referee he had trials with a number of clubs, most notably with the Tranmere Rovers. He did however play part time with a number of lower league clubs, including Marine F.C.
Whilst playing for Marine he earned the nickname 'Whippet', due to his straight line speed with the ball at his feet.
Trussell took charge of many high profile games and was considered to be a 'ruthless but fair' referee. Probably the highlight of his professional refereeing career was being the chosen as the 'man with the whistle' at the Wembely stadium for a play off final. He was known as a strong decision making ref that was well respected at the top level. Several top flight managers including Joe Royle had much praise for Mr.Trussell's performances. Unfortunately his refereeing career was cut short again due to his family commitments.
