The College of Lake County serves over 18,000 students in transfer programs, career programs, GED and adult basic education, non-credit and career development, and training for businesses.

History

In 1968, A. Harold Anderson and Paul W. Brandel donate 181 acres (73.2 ha) parcel of land for Grayslake Campus. Dr. Richard G. Erzen is named first president; serves until 1978. First classes are held on the Grayslake campus on September 25, 1969, drawing an enrollment 2,360 students, taking 224 courses. Tuition is $7 per semester hour. Classes are offered in a six-building pre-fabricated complex, constructed at a cost of approximately $1 million. Referendum passes in December authorizing construction of a permanent campus.

In 1974, the A and B wings are completed on the Grayslake Campus and CLC receives its first five-year accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools

Campus Locations

CLC opens an outreach center in Waukegan in 1978. By 1981, the Lakeshore campus is opened in Waukegan. Property is purchased for Southlake Educational Center in Vernon Hills in 1998. By 2007, new classroom building opens at Southlake Educational Center and is designated as Southlake campus.

University Center of Lake County

A 2006 addition next to the Grayslake campus is the University Center of Lake County, a consortium of four-year colleges offering the opportunity for local residents to complete or add to their education begun at CLC or elsewhere. The Center is not officially part of CLC, but its presence offers a great opportunity for CLC students and other local residents to pursue further education without relocating or commuting a greater distance. Currently, there are 18 universities with classes offered at the University Center.

Collection and Location Information

The College of Lake County's main branch, The John C. Murphy Memorial Library, is located at the Grayslake campus. It was named after one of CLC's earliest teachers and leaders who became the first chairperson of the Communication Arts, Humanities, and Fine Arts Division. The library has a collection of over 110,000 books and 900 periodical titles. Computers in the reference area provide access to databases, many of which are also accessible from off campus through the library's website. The library's Audiovisual Department provides students with access to over 3,000 films and videotapes, 7,000 audio products, and hundreds of other media. The Grayslake branch also houses the Lake County Philanthropy Center through a partnership with the Donor's Forum of Chicago. The Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art and ARTcetera Sales and Rental Gallery are also located inside the Grayslake library.

CLC Libraries and Instructional Services has two additional branches located at the College's Lakeshore and Southlake campuses.

This library's website offers an online card catalog, research assistance via Instant Messaging and email, as well as remote access to a complete virtual library online.

The mission of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County is to foster the cultural and aesthetic life of the district. To help fulfill this mission, the James Lumber Center operates with the following statement of purpose:

History

The Performing Arts Building was officially dedicated on March 8, 1997. The first full season began in September 1997. Since then, thousands of patrons have attended events held in the facility.

In August 2003, the Performing Arts Building was officially renamed to the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts recognizing founding trustee, James Lumber who served on the College of Lake County Board for over 35 years..

Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art

The Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art is a major cultural resource for artists and Lake County residents alike. Established by the College of Lake County Foundation in 1981, the gallery is committed to displaying the works of Illinois artists and increasing the visibility of nationally known artists in Lake County. The gallery promotes tours and educational programs in conjunction with its exhibitions.

Collection

The permanent collection of art at the college numbers over 400 works from not only significant Illinois artists, but also nationally and internationally recognized artists. The collection reflects a diverse range in media and style and is displayed throughout the Grayslake, Lakeshore and Southlake Campuses. Exhibitions

The Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art presents eight exhibits throughout the year, three of which feature Lake County artists. The fall season starts with Recent Works, a juried competition for Lake County artists with cash awards and purchase prizes. January offers a group exhibit open to all Artist Members of the gallery. The CLC Student Art Competition in the spring provides a venue for college art students to professionally display and possibly sell their works. Five other exhibits throughout the year include critically acclaimed artists whose diverse expressions create the opportunity to broaden and perhaps even challenge the community at large. Talks and Art Walks

Gallery Talks are guided tours of current gallery exhibitions. Art Walks are campus walking tours of CLC Art Collection Highlights. Both Tours last about 45 minutes. Tours are available free-of-charge to groups of children and adults. We recommend that you schedule your group tour at least three weeks in advance by writing to the Art Gallery Curator or calling (847) 543-2240. Several podcasts of featured artist talks are also available on the gallery website.
