. CGTU was founded at a congress in Saint-Étienne
in June 1922, and was dominated by communists. In 1923 CGTU became an affiliate of the Red International of Labour Unions. In 1926, some of its members left to create the Confédération Générale du Travail-Syndicaliste Révolutionnaire
(CGT-SR). With the Popular Front
period, CGTU merged back into CGT.
