CPC was formed in 1983 with the purchase of various holdings in the Northern Territory, including Newcastle Waters Station, from Ashburton Pastoral Company. In April 2009 a majority share in CPC was acquired by private equity firm Terra FirmaTerra Firma Capital Partners
