History

The tournament was contested on an annual basis between 1905 and 1929 (with a few exceptions). It has only been played sporadically since, the last editions were played in 1976 and 1992.

The cup has been contested 29 times, won outright by Argentina on 18 occasions and Uruguay 11 occasions.
