replacing outgoing head coach Paul Westhead
. He led the Phoenix Mercury to their second WNBA Championship.
In November of 2011, Gaines was promoted to general manager of the Mercury, taking over a position vacated by Ann Meyers-Drysdale.
His grandparents are Japanese, and his mother is half Japanese.
