Established in 1955, Court Theatre's mission is to discover the power of classic theater, with a vision to become the national center for classic theater. Court works to fulfill this mission through the rigorous exploration of classic dramatic texts, including the African-American canon and musical theatre works as well as through commissioning new adaptations of classic texts.
Named “the most consistently excellent theater company in America” by The Wall Street Journal
, Court has a national reputation for excellence and innovation. Through its five main stage productions per season, as well as symposia, post-performance discussions and education programs, it endeavors to be the national center for classic theatre by thoroughly examining and imaginatively re-envisioning classic works to illuminate timeless themes and uncover immediately relevant messages.
Charles Newell has been Artistic Director since 1994, and in 2010 was joined by Stephen J. Albert as Executive Director.
